Form

Form is the Element of Art which refers to 3Dimensional Object( that is object having length, width and Height). In other words, form is what makes an object on a flat paper (2-Dimension) to look realistic (3-Dimensional). For example, how would you make a circle and a ball look different on paper.

Three basic things that is used to create form are:

  1. Adding planes
  2. Adding contour lines
  3. Adding Value

Adding additional planes to an existing 2 D figure adds depth to it making it appear 3 dimensional.

2. Adding contour line

It’s easy to add planes to object that have edges, but if it’s an object without edges like a circle or organic shapes, we can add contouring lines to add the illusion of a 3-dimensional figure.

Contouring lines are drawn along the form of the object or in other words along the shape of the object that adds to the definition of it. For example, the circle below can be given the illusion of a sphere by adding contouring lines as shown.

FORMS Can be Classified as Geometric or Organic

Geometric Forms:

They are basically Mathematical forms which can be defined by specific names such as Cubes, Cylinder, Spheres, Pyramids and so on.

Organic Forms:

Organic Forms are forms found in nature such as a leaf or a puddle which cannot be defined by a mathematical name.

Form Exercise:

  1. Add Forms to the geometrical Shapes Square, Rectangle and triangle to turn it into cube, cylinder and cone respectively by adding planes to it.
  2. Make an organic shape and add Form to it.
  3. Using the concept of value add form to a circle and turn it into a sphere.
